Age: 14 ? (His age is not made clear in the book, but there is a guestimate of 14... I think its wrong but going with it for now >>; ... More recent books seem to hint he might be more like 18.)
Background: Pyrgus lives in the land of Faerie. There are Faeries of Light and Faeries of Night. Pyrgus is of the Light, and just so happens to be the son of the Purple Emperor, leader of the Faeries of Light. He has disassociated himself with his royal roots, however. Rather than act like the Crowned Prince, he acts like a commoner and lives among normal folk. He spends most of his time getting into trouble for the sake of rescuing animals. He has an overly large soft spot for animals and will pretty much risk death (or serious beatings) just to save one. He’s very brave, or foolish, however you look at it.
His family is of the line of Iris, which is just a fortunate family of the Faeries of Light who happened to stumble upon a portal that leads to the Analogue World (or, human world). Originally, Faeries of Light (before the house of Iris) discovered the Analogue World when they were stranded on an island that contained the first portal. They crossed over into the human world, where they shrunk and grew wings (what we typically think of as Faeries). They were never rescued and ended up just living in the Analogue World.
The island was discovered again 400 years later by a wizard of the Night. The portal had since disappeared, but this wizard (his name was Arion) found a journal left by the previous Faeries. He searched and finally discovered another portal. He knew if he could own it he would have access to great riches and power (since he would own the only known portal to the Analogue World). However, the portal was on the land of a Faerie of Light noble. The noble didn’t use the land, and the Night faerie tried to purchase it from him. The Light noble became suspicious and discovered the portal for themselves. In doing so they stumbled upon great wealth, but also made enemies with the Faeries of the Night, who consider themselves to have found the portal first. A war broke out over it, but the Light faeries one (which happened to be the house of Iris).
The two Faerie races are trying to make a sort of peace through negotiations. However, the Nights don’t really want peace, but rather want their wealth and power that they think they deserved in the first place.
At the beginning of the story, Pyrgus steals a phoenix from Lord Hairstreak, who is a prominent noble of the Faeries of Night. The phoenix was being mistreated, and Pyrgus couldn’t stand for that. After this, Lord Hairstreak sent men to capture Pyrgus. It is assumed by the King and his court that they wish to hold Prince Pyrgus hostage for ransom in negotiations between the two Faerie realms. However, it is later discovered that they actually wish to assassinate Pyrgus (for reasons unknown to the King).
In this time Pyrgus also manages to try and rescue some kittens and their mother from a glue factory, gets the ever living sh*t beat out of him, and almost gets sacrificed to the demon prince Beleth, when he is summoned by the King (his father).
To keep Pyrgus safe, he is sent into the Analogue World. However, the portal is sabotaged and he ends up not only in some random place in England, but he also is made small and grows wings. Typically the portals now have filters so they would go through without this change (and instead just look like normal humans). In addition to this, Pyrgus is given a vaccination before he leaves that, also sabotaged, which contains a poison that is supposed to slowly kill him.
And so his adventures ensue… but back to his history.
Pyrgus has one sister (Holly Blue) and a half brother (Comma). His sister is a skilled leader and has a spy network that is considered even better than the Imperial Espionage Service (even though she is younger than Pyrgus). Comma is also younger but seems to be relatively worthless. He is second in line to the throne. His father’s name is Apatura Iris and he is known as the Purple Emperor, mostly because the castle is made of purple stone.
Personality: Loves animals, above all. Hates their mistreatment. Will risk severe beating and probably death to ensure they are okay. Does not tolerate evil. Doesn’t really think twice for his own well-being. Laid back. Clever. Maybe a little naïve, or foolish. Cool headed, unless when animals are being harmed. Then he acts without really thinking. Ethical treatment above all, even law. He will injure a person to help an animal. Doesn’t really like people cause he thinks their laws are stupid if they allow evil to exist. Sacrifices even valuables to save animals.
